A product can be mapped to more than one (1) category, and more than one (1) section. Categories represent a "horizontal" access of browsing by the customer, and Sections are a vertical access of browsing, if necessary. The example below is from the AHS rescue site, which makes extensive use of sections, allowing customers to find products not only by category (e.g. Ascenders, Apparel), but also by section (they call them discipline) which their customers relate to by job assignment (Fire Rescue, Water Rescue, etc). This kind of cross referencing capability maximizes the ease of use for consumers.

A sample cross-reference matrix looks as shown below (fictional) for a products A-N (as defined in the products buttons within each category and section page).

Category\Section Fire Rescue Water Rescue Helicopter Ops
Ascenders A, B C
Descenders D, E   F
Apparel   G, H
Belay & Rappel I, J, K, L   M, N
Carabiners A G, I

Note that this one products can be mapped to more than one category and section. In the above case, Product A is mapped to categories: Ascenders, and Carabiners, and Section Fire Rescue. Product F is mapped to one category (Descenders) and one Section (Helicopter Ops). Again, the use of sections is completely optional. If all sections were removed from the above matrix, the site mappings would look as follows:

Category Products
Ascenders A, B, C
Descenders D, E, F
Apparel G, H
Belay & Rappel I, J, K, L, M, N
Carabiners A, G, I
